Cinema Ariel
This is an experimental, fictional branding for an old, abandoned and iconic cinema in Limassol which is called Ariel located in Makarios Avenue and Ayias Zonis Street. The cinema was really famous during the 60s and now it's a landmark in the town. However, the cinema is going to be demolished soon to give its place to skyscrapers changing the scenery of the neighbourhood. The cinema is so famous among the citizens of Limassol, therefore when someone gives guiding instructions to somebody, they refer to Cinema Ariel as a point of reference. Unfortunately, I couldn't find any photos from the past to include in this project.
Today, the building stands neglected and in a really bad condition. The logo is a minimal, modern staircase, because the building has a long staircase on the west side which goes up to the second outdoor panoramic screen. It could also be seen as a symbol of ascension into a cultural experience. It could also mean a "Stairway to the silver screen". Primary colors are: vivid orange and gold which can be connected to the sun, illumination, energy and the cypriot landscape and evoke both nostalgia and sophistication. These 2 warm colors suit well with the charcoal and light grey complimentary colors. Mint green and pink are used as secondary colors. Alternatively, a monochrome palette could also work, with shades of grey and black for a more modern and sleek interpretation.
On the 2nd image for 'Cyprus film festival', the dark blocks show rhythm and unfolding as the text says. The coasters have quotes from movies on them. As for the posters in the last image, the abstract stair shape connect to each other forming a pattern reminiscent of connection and Cypriot tapestry. The typeFace I chose is Graphik, a grotesque one inspired from Swiss Modern posters. It gives a clean, modern and vintage look to the brand at the same time. If this branding was viable, then for the future I would see the branding marry the historic character of the cinema with its architectural uniqueness, creating a memorable and distinct visual identity.
